SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics' operating profit increased more than 15 times in the second quarter from a year earlier thanks to a strong recovery in the memory chip industry after a lengthy slump.

The world's biggest memory chipmaker announced on Friday that its operating profit reached 10.4 trillion won ($7.5 billion) for the three months through June, up 1,452.2% year-on-year. Its revenue soared 23.3% to 74 trillion won during the same period.
