SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has opened the curtains on what it calls the world's first cinema screen that works without a projector, using light-emitting diodes instead to produce its own picture.

The first viewings on the LED screen at Lotte Cinema World Tower here began Friday, the South Korean electronics maker said. The theater system features ultrahigh-definition 4K picture quality, as well as sound provided by U.S. audio company Harman International, which Samsung acquired in a transaction completed earlier this year.
