Sony gaming AI beats Gran Turismo world champ racer

Group eyes robotic and self-driving applications for program that teaches itself to play

Unlike chess or go, which is played by turns, Gran Turismo requires players to make real-time decisions based on what is happening in the game.   © Sony Interactive Entertainment

TOKYO -- An artificial intelligence program developed by Sony Group has defeated the world champion in Gran Turismo, a racing simulation game that requires players to make split-second decisions.

Sony developed the AI program, dubbed Gran Turismo Sophy, together with video game unit Sony Interactive Entertainment and other partners. A study has been published in the British science journal Nature.
