TOKYO -- SpaceX and telecom group KDDI plan to begin a satellite-based service in Japan that goes directly to smartphones as early as 2024, the companies said Wednesday, bringing coverage even to remote settings without an antenna or other special equipment.

Texting will be supported first, with voice and data coverage provided later.
