KUMAMOTO, Japan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. founder and towering industry figure Morris Chang predicted there will be a "chip renaissance" in Japan as the country attempts to regain the chipmaking glory it enjoyed in the 1980s.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of TSMC's first chip production plant in Japan, Chang said TSMC received an invitation to build a facility in the country from the Japanese economy ministry in 2019.
