TOKYO -- Businesses are responsible for a hefty majority of research and development spending in Taiwan, a new study shows, shedding light on what makes the island's electronics sector so competitive globally.

But the data also highlights the limited resources devoted to basic research, which poses a threat to Taiwan's capabilities over the long term.
