TOKYO -- Mercari announced Tuesday that it has entered the mobile telecommunication business, as the major Japanese e-commerce platform seeks to create synergies with its marketplace app and other existing services.

The tech company launched the new service as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which borrows from the mobile networks of major carriers and provides mobile services at discounted prices.
