TOKYO -- The Japanese government will promote efforts to expand the production and installation of undersea communications cables, Nikkei has learned, as recent suspected sabotage highlights their importance to national security.

Ships linked to China and Russia have been suspected of damaging cables near Taiwan and in the Baltic Sea in separate incidents, likely to test how affected governments respond.
