TOKYO -- NTT and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom have activated a communications network between Tokyo and Taipei using the Japanese company's IOWN technology, achieving ultra-high speeds, the companies announced Thursday.

Communication was achieved between a Nippon Telegraph and Telephone research facility in Musashino, Tokyo, and a Chunghwa data center about 3,000 kilometers away in about 17 milliseconds. With current optical lines, the transmission would take about 200 milliseconds to 500 milliseconds.
