SINGAPORE -- A Tokyo-based company affiliated with Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings will start selling low-priced coal to power utilities in Asia, starting with those in South Korea and Taiwan.
By blending in lower-quality coal, the Tepco affiliate seeks to set prices 10-20% lower than those for high-grade coal typically used at fossil-fuel power plants in Japan. Jera, established last year, is a 50-50 joint venture of a Tepco subsidiary and Chubu Electric Power.
