TAIPEI   Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s recent announcement that it plans to build a $3 billion advanced chip factory in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing was classic Morris Chang. The company's founder and chairman knows that China covets the technology to produce 16-nanometer chips, and that setting up a base on the mainland could nip potential competition there in the bud.

It is these kinds of decisions that have made Chang's name synonymous with "bold" and "visionary" for many.
