Toshiba's robust profit masks underlying issues

Venerable manufacturer is battling credit concerns, loss of customers, CFO says

TOKYO -- Embattled electronics conglomerate Toshiba had a brief respite when it reported a record operating profit for April-September on Thursday. But the results masked underlying weaknesses, including a lack of new profit drivers outside its key semiconductors segment and lingering credit concerns.

These worries kept Toshiba shares out of favor with investors Thursday, even as the broader market hovered at around a 25-year high.
