TOKYO -- Ryukakusan, a Japanese producer of sore throat medicine and other health products, is fortifying itself while the going is good.

Visitors to Japan have been stocking up on the company's goods, buoying its earnings. But travel trends and consumer preferences can change in a flash; tourists are not buying jewelry like they used to, for example. So Ryukakusan is taking steps to improve its production efficiency now.
