Toyota sees auto sales topping 10m for fifth year in 2018

Expanding market share in Southeast Asia seen as key to future growth

Larger SUVs like the RAV4 are selling well in the U.S. thanks to cheap oil prices.

TOKYO -- The Toyota Motor group expects to sell more than 10 million automobiles for a fifth straight year in 2018 thanks to the popularity of sport utility vehicles in China and the U.S.

Including members Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor, the group's 2018 sales are likely to beat Toyota's 2017 forecast of 10.2 million units. The automaker could top its sales record of 10.23 million vehicles from 2014 should sales in China and the U.S. remain brisk. Toyota Motor alone projects sales of around 9.4 million units, up from its forecast of 9.26 million for 2017.
