Toyota to build plug-in hybrids in China

Toyota will launch a plug-in-hybrid version of the Corolla, which it now offers as a conventional hybrid in China.

BEIJING -- Toyota Motor will in 2018 become the first Japanese automaker to roll out plug-in hybrids in China, aiming to tap a growing market as well as capitalize on government subsidies for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The company discussed its eco-car strategy Sunday ahead of the Beijing auto show kicking off Monday. It plans to offer locally manufactured plug-in-hybrid versions of the Corolla and the Levin.
