Toyota unveils AI concept car at CES

New model incorporating some features to perform test runs in Japan

KAZUYUKI OKUDAIRA, Nikkei staff writer | Japan

LAS VEGAS, U.S. -- Toyota Motor rolled out its new concept car featuring artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology at a press event held before the International Consumer Electronics Show kicks off on Thursday.

The consumer electronics and technology trade show will run through Sunday.

Named the Concept-i, Toyota's futuristic vehicle is a four-seater passenger car that does not emit carbon dioxide.

The AI system can recognize drivers' emotions and also collect data on their preferences. It can also hold conversations with drivers.

AI will control the car based on a driver's emotions and level of fatigue. For example, when AI detects that the driver is tired, the technology will suggest switching to the self-driving mode.

Toyota plans to produce a vehicle that includes some of the features equipped on the concept car and begin test runs on public roads in Japan within a few years.
