SYDNEY -- Earlier this year, representatives from major engineering and construction companies were on their way from Sydney to Newcastle for a meeting about connecting the two cities with an ultra-fast train service.

The meeting with Australia's High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) was delayed, however. The reason? The existing train service, which covers the 170-kilometer journey in about two and a half hours, was running late, and several of the attendees were onboard.
