TOKYO -- The percentage of container ships arriving on time has hovered below 60% worldwide, forcing companies to rethink their inventory strategies.

On top of continued rerouting around the Red Sea and the Suez Canal because of worsening conditions in the Middle East, congestion at major ports is causing widespread disruption. With delays becoming the new norm, more businesses are keeping buffer inventory on hand.
