Hitachi Rail to deliver 70 train cars to U.K. in $640m deal

TOKYO -- Hitachi Rail announced Monday that it has won an order to make 70 train cars for U.K. rail lines, to be run under a lease arrangement with maintenance services together expected to be worth about 500 million pounds ($640 million).

British public transportation provider FirstGroup will operate the trains under a 10-year lease. Hitachi Rail will manufacture 14 trains with five cars each, with deliveries set to start in 2027.
