MUMBAI -- India's first fully underground subway line began running Monday here in the country's commercial capital, in an effort to alleviate worsening congestion in a metropolitan area that is home to 18 million people.

Mumbai Metro Line 3, developed by Mumbai Metro Rail, began partial service along a stretch that includes Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Bandra Kurla Complex business district.
