Indonesia aims to rival Changi, Kuala Lumpur in $6bn airport deal

Sumatra airport focal point of new partnership with Indian and French firms

Passengers at Kualanamu International Airport in 2019: Indonesia wants to expand the facility on the island of Sumatra to compete with bigger airports in Singapore and Malaysia.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia is seeking to challenge Singapore's Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport as regional hubs via a $6 billion tie-up with Indian and French airport operators. 

GMR Airports Consortium -- jointly owned by India's GMR Group and France's Aeroports de Paris Group -- won a contract last week to operate Kualanamu International Airport in Indonesia's North Sumatra Province with local state-operator Angkasa Pura II.
