TOKYO -- The Japanese trading house Sojitz has signed a 45 billion yen ($290 million) contract with MRT Jakarta, operator of Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit, to extend the subway system in the Indonesian capital's traffic-heavy central area, the company announced on Thursday.

The extension project will run 5.8 kilometers between the stations of Bundaran HI and Kota on the MRT's North-South Line. Sojitz will oversee the engineering, procurement and installation of the MRT facilities, including tracks and signaling and communications systems.
