JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo broke ground on Wednesday on Jakarta's second subway line, which will eventually stretch 84 kilometers to neighboring provinces, as the government aims to solve the capital's crippling traffic congestion and develop its suburbs.
Running through Cikarang in West Java province to Balaraja in Banten province, the East-West Line of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) will be much longer than the existing North-South Line, which first opened in 2019 and currently runs 15.7 km. Compared to the first line, which only connects major points of the capital, the new line is expected to bring more users with its larger coverage areas, including to industrial regions and suburbs.
