TOKYO -- Nippon Yusen plans to start dismantling ships and recycling the high-purity iron used in them as early as 2028, with the aim of handling 20 vessels per year, the shipping company announced Monday.

NYK Line, as the Japanese shipper is better known, is working with industrial waste company Oono Associates to refurbish a dry dock in central Japan's Aichi prefecture belonging to Oono. Large machinery will be installed and used to dismantle ships, minimizing human involvement. The cost of refurbishing the dry dock has not been disclosed.
