SAPPORO, Japan -- Korean Air will begin offering ground handling services at Japanese airports, a rare move for a foreign airline, Nikkei has learned. It will start operations at New Chitose Airport, on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, as early as January, with future plans to serve other big gateways in the country.

The move comes with Japan's airports suffering from a shortage of ground handling workers that poses challenges for airlines wanting to increase the number of flights. As such, Korean Air has decided to train workers on its own.
