FRANKFURT, Germany -- At the Air China check-in counter in Frankfurt Airport recently, Dominic Meyer showed off the cheap ticket he bought for a post-graduation trip to Asia. His Frankfurt-Tokyo return flights cost him only 600 euros ($649), about 300 euros cheaper than flying with any other airline.

Not just that, his journey via Beijing is also several hours faster than what other airlines offer.
