SINGAPORE -- Singapore broke ground on Wednesday on its fifth terminal at Changi Airport, a multi-billion-dollar project that marks the airport's most ambitious and extensive expansion to date, as the city-state prepares for a rise in air travel across Asia and greater competition among aviation hubs.
Slated to open by the mid-2030s, Terminal 5 will initially add capacity for 50 million passengers a year, boosting the airport's total throughput by 50% to over 140 million annually. Covering 10.8 sq. km, the site allows for future satellite terminals to be added in line with demand. Once operational, Changi aims to connect to over 200 cities worldwide.
