TOKYO -- Japan's shinkansen bullet trains connecting Tokyo and Osaka will stop onboard meal service this fall for most passengers due to waning demand and a shortage of workers.

The food carts will be discontinued on the Nozomi and Hikari trains at the end of October. Starting Nov. 1, onboard food will be available only on the first-class "green" cars through a service in which passengers place orders via smartphones and other devices.
