SHIZUOKA, Japan -- A private railway along the Izu Peninsula, south of Tokyo, is collaborating with the operator of the Taipei Metro to bring in overseas visitors, as well as promoting tourist spots and local specialty foods along the line.
On one recent Friday, an Izukyu Line resort train bound for the end of the peninsula was filled past capacity, even on a weekday. About 70% of the passengers appeared to be foreign tourists, and large suitcases were lined up under the seats.
