SAPPORO, Japan -- Overseas luxury hotel brands are moving into downtown Sapporo one after another, aiming to capture soaring demand from foreign tourists in an area previously dominated by domestic operators.

The Courtyard by Marriott Sapporo opened on Tuesday in the Nakajima Park area, about a 10-minute drive from Sapporo Station. It is the seventh Marriott-branded hotel on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido and the second in its capital city of Sapporo.
