TOKYO -- Mt. Fuji officially opened to climbers on Monday with new restrictions and tolls aimed at preventing the excessive crowds that come with overtourism as well as dangerously fast ascents.

Yamanashi prefecture imposed restrictions on the most popular Yoshida trail on Monday, limiting the number of climbers beyond the fifth station -- a popular starting point -- to 4,000 per day and charging a toll of 2,000 yen ($12).
