NAGANO, Japan -- Nozawa Onsen is stepping up its efforts to become an all-year destination for tourists as the Japanese ski village aims to tap the record-breaking surge in the number of overseas visitors to the country.

The number of stays by foreigners in Nozawa Onsen totaled 120,000 in 2019, making the village the third most popular destination for inbound tourists in the central Japanese prefecture, after the resort town of Karuizawa and the city of Matsumoto, which is home to a famous castle.
