Number of visitors to Japan hits August record of over 2.9m

January to August total tops 24m, up nearly 60% from last year

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The number of foreign visitors to Japan rose 36% from a year earlier to 2.93 million in August, a record high for the month, government data showed Wednesday.

The total also represents a 16.4% rise from August 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.
