TOKYO -- The northeast region of Japan hit by the earthquake and tsunami 14 years ago is promoting tourism as a way to remember the disaster and boost the local economy.

In February, eight school officials from Taiwan visited the ruins of an elementary school building preserved in Namie, Fukushima prefecture. A guide explained to the Taiwanese group how all the teachers and students in the school at the time were quickly evacuated to the mountains 1.5 kilometers away.
