BEIJING -- The newly opened Universal Studios Beijing and the surrounding resort will double in size and add more hotels under an expansion plan announced Wednesday, in a gambit to boost tourism and revitalize the local economy.

The ambitious expansion plan comes just three months after the park's opening. Universal Beijing Resort, which houses the theme park, officially debuted in September with an area of 1.6 sq. km. The second-phase enlargement will add another 2.2 sq. km, said Cui Shuqiang, Beijing's executive vice mayor.
