Asian discount airlines expanding presence in Japan

Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson announces the opening of a route between Singapore and Hokkaido, Japan, in Sapporo on April 19.

TOKYO/SAPPORO -- Asian budget airlines are intensifying competition over Japan's sky amid a steep increase in tourists visiting the country.

     Singapore's Scoot will begin flying between Singapore and Sapporo, Hokkaido, in October, while Hong Kong Express Airways will open a route between Hong Kong and Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, in July. Taiwanese and South Korean discount airlines are also expanding operations.
