Uniqlo's Hong Kong role models are failing the test of time

HONG KONG -- This city is a special place for Fast Retailing. Not only is Hong Kong where a teenage Tadashi Yanai made his first overseas trip, it is also where the company's chairman and CEO was inspired to throw his hat into the fast-fashion ring.

     Even the Uniqlo name was born here. When registering the brand -- a shortened version of "Unique Clothing Warehouse," as the stores were called at the time -- a "q" was mistakenly inserted where a "c" was meant to go.
