Uniqlo's Hong Kong role models are failing the test of time

Shoppers stroll along Nathan Road in Hong Kong. Fast Retailing CEO Tadashi Yanai was inspired by such Hong Kong casual fashion brands as Giordano.

HONG KONG -- This city is a special place for Fast Retailing. Not only is Hong Kong where a teenage Tadashi Yanai made his first overseas trip, it is also where the company's chairman and CEO was inspired to throw his hat into the fast-fashion ring.

Even the Uniqlo name was born here. When registering the brand -- a shortened version of "Unique Clothing Warehouse," as the stores were called at the time -- a "q" was mistakenly inserted where a "c" was meant to go.
