Of the many family-owned conglomerates across Asia, 33 stood out to us as the most noteworthy based on such factors as their influence, reputation and market position in their respective economies. Market capitalization, while taken into consideration, was not given a heavy weighting because many of the groups hold assets under unlisted vehicles. Geographic diversity was also taken into account to bring balance to the list. There is some overlap with our Asia300 coverage, which focuses on Asia excluding Japan. Companies from mainland China and Vietnam were not included because of their relatively short histories of private ownership.
