Advanced Info Service

Company Background

Advanced Info Service is Thailand's largest mobile service provider in subscribers and revenue. It is the core subsidiary of Intouch Holdings, which recently changed its name from Shin Corp., the telecom company established by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin's sister and former prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, was also once chief executive of AIS. The Shinawatras sold their stake in Shin to Singapore's Temasek in 2006. Currently, Intouch Holdings owns around 40% of AIS and Singapore Telecom owns about 23%.

AIS lags behind its two smaller rivals, Total Access Communication and True Corp., in establishing next-generation 4G network infrastructure in Thailand. It is the only carrier yet to launch 4G services as its current network does not have sufficient bandwidth. The military government that took power in May 2014 has suspended a planned 4G spectrum auction, citing "transparency" reasons.

In an attempt to diversify, AIS plans to launch fixed-line broadband services from 2015 at a cost of 4.6 billion baht. The target is to have 80,000 subscribers within the first year of service.
