Company Background

Chunghwa Telecom is Taiwan's largest telecommunications company, with total assets of more than $14 billion. It operates not only fixed-line and mobile service businesses but also media and IT solutions services. The number of telecom subscribers exceeded 22.4 million as of September 2015. The company employs over 23,000 people.

Chunghwa has been expanding its fourth-generationhigh-speed mobile broadband service to enhance profitability. In 2014, it became Taiwan's first telecom provider to launch 4G services. It continues to invest in 4G infrastructure. To diversify its revenue sources, the company is promoting music, video and other forms of entertainment to its subscribers. Chunghwa is also strengthening its information technology and cloud businesses in the hopes of pulling in corporate clients.

Chunghwa is around 40% owned by Taiwan's government. Tsai Lih-shyng became chairman and CEO in 2014. Before joining the company, he had worked at Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co., or TSMC, the world's largest chip foundry. Tsai served as CEO of two wholly owned TSMC subsidiaries -- TSMC Solar and TSMC Solid State Lighting.
