Company Background

FPT is the largest information technology company in Vietnam. Sales in the year ended December 2018 totaled some 23.21 trillion Vietnamese dong ($1 billion).

The core business of the company focuses on three main sectors: information technology, telecommunications and education. It undertakes software development for many foreign clients, with half of its orders coming from Japan.

In the 2019-2021 period, FPT plans to embark upon a digital transformation -- a strategic shift from IT services to DX service provider -- and to be among the top 50 global digital services.

The company founded a university in hopes of expanding the number of capable engineers available. It currently has nearly 17,000 students, of whom about half are majoring in IT.

The government holds only a 5.9% stake in FPT. It is 48.75% owned by foreign investors and the largest shareholder is Chairman Truong Gia Binh, who holds just 7.08%.

The company went public on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange in 2006. Its market capitalization in 2019, at about $1.37 billion, is one of the largest among non-state entities. The company is expanding its business abroad and had operations in 45 countries and regions in 2018. In June 2014, it acquired a Slovakian IT company. In July 2018, FPT acquired a U.S. technology consulting company.

FPT started as a food processing technology company founded by Binh in 1988. Binh studied mathematics and computers at Moscow State University, where he earned his doctorate. He has been dubbed the Bill Gates of Vietnam. In 2013, he was given the Nikkei Asia Award by the Nikkei Group (Japan) for his contributions to the development of Vietnam’s IT industry.

The company was founded by Binh Gia Truong, Tien Quang Le, Ngoc Quang Bui, Bao Cao Do, Nam Thanh Nguyen, and Thanh Thanh Thi Truong on September 13, 1988 and is headquartered in Ha Noi, Vietnam.
