Jardine Matheson was founded in China as a trading company in 1832 by Scotland's William Jardine and James Matheson, and has become one of the world's largest conglomerates. The company is majority owned by the Keswick family, descendants of William Jardine's older sister Jean Johnstone. Chairman Henry Keswick has been a director of the company since 1967.
The company's interests include Hongkong Land, Dairy Farm and Mandarin Oriental. Hongkong Land is Asia's leading property developer, operating some 800,000 sq. meter of office and retail property in major cities across the region. Dairy Farm manages retail businesses in Asia under brands such as Ikea, 7-Eleven, Mannings and Wellcome. Mandarin Oriental is an international hotel investment and management company, which operates more than 40 resorts around the world.
