PT Aneka Tambang Tbk

Company Background

Aneka Tambang, known as Antam, is a state-owned diversified mining company. It is Indonesia's largest producer of nickel, which is used for car components and kitchen utensils. The company also produces gold, silver and bauxite.

Antam has seen sales and profits plunge since Indonesia in January banned nickel ore exports. The company has since agreed with Freeport Indonesia, the local unit of U.S. based Freeport-McMoRan, to develop a copper-processing plant in Indonesia. Antam has also pushed efforts to expand its gold unit, but the business has been hit by softening prices.

Company Chairman R. Sukhyar is also the director general for coal and mineral resources at Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. At his government post, Sukhyar issues operating permits and fleshes out regulations. Tato Miraza, who joined Antam in 1992, was appointed president in 2013. The Indonesian government owns about 65% of Antam's shares.
