Samsung C&T Corp.
Company Background
Samsung C&T was created by merging among Samsung group companies, including the construction and trading businesses of former Samsung C&T, the fashion business of Cheil Industries and theme park operator Samsung Everland. Established in 1938 by Samsung group founder Lee Byung-chull, the company began as Samsung Sanghoe.
Samsung C&T is often referred to as the group's de facto holdings company, because Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and other founding family members hold a large stake in the company. The company also holds a large stake in Samsung Life Insurance, a major shareholder of Samsung Electronics. Given the fact that Samsung group companies invest in each other in an intertwined manner, Samsung C&T is not meeting requirements to become a holding company, according to South Korean regulations.
Samsung C&T is an industry leader in South Korea's construction business. The company was involved in the Burj Khalifa project, the world's tallest skyscraper in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. A group of South Korean companies, including Samsung C&T, won a nuclear power plant project from the UAE in 2010. In its apparel business, Samsung C&T is also a producer and retailer of fashion clothing. Samsung C&T often draws attention on the stock market, but largely not as an operating company, because the company is the core unit of the Samsung group amid its on-and-off restructuring efforts.
