Singapore Telecommunications Ltd.

Company Background

Formerly the public telephone authority, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) was privatized in 1992, before it listed the shares on the Singapore Exchange in 1993. Temasek Holdings, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, holds a majority of the shares. The group's chief executive, Chua Sock Koong, joined the company in 1989. She was chief financial officer before taking over as CEO in 2007. Forbes magazine ranked her as one of the world's 100 most powerful women in 2014.

SingTel Group makes most of its money outside Singapore, through major telecommunication affiliates. Not only does it own Optus of Australia, it also partially owns Bharti Airtel of India, Telekomunikasi Selular of Indonesia, Advanced Info Service of Thailand, Globe Telecom of the Philippines and Pacific Bangladesh Telecom of Bangladesh. The company has been making a series of acquisitions in the digital advertisement industry through Amobee, a former Silicon Valley-based ad agency wholly owned by SingTel since 2012.
