State Bank of India
Company Background
State Bank of India is the country's largest commercial bank, with about 16,000 branches and nearly 200 overseas offices. The state-owned financial institution has five domestic and seven overseas banking subsidiaries, including in the U.S., Russia and Indonesia. It is around 60% owned by the government.
Arundhati Bhattacharya has chaired the bank since October 2013. She is the first woman to hold the top post at the institution. Before joining the bank in 1977, she studied English literature, not finance. In her time at SBI, she has worked in such areas as foreign exchange, retail banking, human resources and investment banking. Bhattacharya was involved in creating SBI General Insurance, SBI SG Securities and other key initiatives at the bank. She is a member of the Indo-U.S. CEO Forum and has been included on lists of the most powerful businesswomen by Forbes and Fortune.
SBI's origins can be traced to the early 19th century with the creation in 1806 of Bank of Calcutta, which was renamed Bank of Bengal in 1809. It was the first joint stock bank in British India before the establishment of Bank of Bombay in 1840 and Bank of Madras in 1843. In 1921, all three banks were merged to form Imperial Bank of India, which in turn became State Bank of India in 1955. Reserve Bank of India acquired a controlling stake in the institution at that time. In 2007, the Indian government bought all of RBI's holdings in the bank.
