TPK Holding Co., Ltd.

Company Background

TPK Holding is a major manufacturer of touch panels for smartphones, tablets and PCs. Its client list includes Apple of the U.S. and Chinese smartphone makers. The Taiwan-based company's main production facilities are in Xiamen, in China's Fujian Province.

Chairman Michael Chiang established TPK in 2005, having recognized the potential of touch panels. Previously, he founded Taiwan Video & Monitoring to tap the VCR and monitor market.

Until the early 2000s, resistive touch panels, which respond to pressure on the display surface, were the norm. Chiang's company improved technology for transparent projected capacitive touch screens, which respond to even a light touch. He established a mass production system and supplied panels to Apple for the first iPhone, released in 2007. That made capacitive touch panels an industry standard.

TPK boosted capital spending on expectations that Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system, released in 2012, would increase demand for touch panels. The market did not expand as anticipated, and the company remains saddled with overcapacity. A price war with Chinese panel producers has also intensified.

TPK in November 2014 appointed Michael Chung, a former executive of Hon Hai Precision Industry, better known as Foxconn Technology Group, as president and CEO in the hope that he would improve earnings.
