It was the first joint stock bank in British India before the establishment of Bank of Bombay in 1840 and Bank of Madras in 1843. In 1921, all three banks were merged to form Imperial Bank of India, which in turn became State Bank of India in 1955. Reserve Bank of India acquired a controlling stake in the institution at that time. In 2007, the Indian government bought all of RBI's holdings in the bank.
