Company background

Before becoming Telekomunikasi Indonesia's president in 2012, Arief Yahya managed regional operations for the company in Kalimantan and East Java. As president, he has stepped up efforts to accelerate the company's global reach. In Australia, the company, more commonly called Telkom, acquired a call center provider and agreed to form a joint venture with telecommunications giant Telstra. It also plans to invest $400 million in laying submarine cables, which will boost Internet connections from Indonesia to the U.S. and Europe. Yahya left the company to join Joko Widodo's cabinet in October 2014.

The Indonesian government owns a majority stake in Telkom as well as voting and veto rights. Telkom's crown jewel is the mobile operator unit Telkomsel, in which Singapore Telecommunications, better than as SingTel, holds a 35% stake. Telkomsel has more than 130 million mobile subscribers and is the largest contributor to Telkom's revenues.

Telkom went public in 1995. In addition to being listed on the local stock market, Telkom shares are also traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
