Company background

CIMB Group Holdings has grown into a regional banking group through mergers and acquisitions, especially in the past 10 years under ex-Group CEO Nazir Razak. Its recent major acquisitions include the Royal Bank of Scotland's Asia-Pacific investment banking business in 2012. Nazir, the youngest brother of Prime Minister Najib Razak, was re-designated as the group's chairman and made a director at Khazanah Nasional from September 2014.

Government investment fund Khazanah Nasional is the major shareholder of the bank with a 30% stake. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group holds 5%. The group is now headed by Acting Group Chief Executive Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who was once the head of Maybank investment banking. Overseas businesses led by listed subsidiaries such as Bank CIMB Niaga in Indonesia and CIMB Thai Bank make substantial contributions to group profit. The group is also one of the top brokers in Southeast Asia and one of the leading global Islamic bond issuers.
